Text: !Obituary of Thomas Smart in SL Tribune Saturday Morning 7 Jan 1922: LOGAN FINANCIER IS LAID AT REST
Services for Thomas Smart attended by Hundreds of Representative citizens.
Logan January 6 - Funeral services for Thomas Smart, banker, sheepman, and capitalist of this city and Salt Lake, were held today in the Logan Tabernacle, after which the body was interred in the city cemetery with impressive ceremonies in respect to the financier who helped to build up Logan and Northern Utah. A large number attended the services, among them being scores of businessmen, citizens, students and faculty members of the Agricultural College. President Joseph E. Cardon of Cache Stake presided at the service.
School was dismissed at the college during the afternoon as a mark of respect for the former trustee of the school, who also was responsible for the erection in 1913 of the college gymnasium which bears his name. He gave $25,000 to the building, which act was the means of inducing the state legislature to appropriate the remaining sum needed.
The paullbearers were Bishop Alma Sonne, Bishop William Evans Sr., William H. Thain, Apostle Mathias F. Cowley, Presidnet William B. Parkinson, and Bishop John Q. Adams.
As a appreciation for what Mr. Smart did for U.A.C. Athletics, the "A" club composed of men who have made letters in athletics at the college, attended in a body. The faculty also was formed in a body.
The speakers who had been intimately associated with Mr. Smart during his active career were Hyrum E. Crockett, secretary of State; Dr. E.G. Peterson president of the Agricultural College; Apostle John A. Widtsoe, former president of the agricultural College, and Apostle Melvin J. Ballard. Mr. Crockett and apostles Widtsoe and Ballard were former Logan residents and had been neighbors of Mr. Smart.
Mr. Crockett, who began his banking career with Mr. Smart many years ago, told of some of the good traits of the financier. He stated that few people knew of the charities of Mr. Smart, who was very liberal in giving money to those in need. It was characteristic, Mr. Corckett said, for Mr. Smart to stop along the road in the country and give a check to a poor man in need.
Dr. Peterson referred to the association of Mr. Smart with the Agricultural College, as also did Dr. Witsoe. It was during Dr. Witsoe's regime as president that Mr. Smart, as trustee, made the contribution of $25,000 toward the erection of the college gymnasium. Both of these college executives spoke highly of Mr. Smart's work for the college, both as a legislator and as a trustee.
Apostle Ballard used a biblical text and spoke of the resurrection and life hereafter.
The Tabernacle Choir sang the Anthem "They that Sow in Tears Shall Reap in Joy," and the hymn "Nearer My God to Thee. Miss Nora Elliason sang "The Holy City, and Professor William Spicker played Roff's "Cavatina" on the violin, accompanied by Proff. S.E. Clark. John T. Caine offered the invoacation and Pres. Joseph Quinney pronounced the benediction. At the cemetery the grave was dedicated by John Q. Adams.
